Garage Door Won’t Open

What’s Happening

A garage door that won’t open is almost always caused by one of four things: a broken spring, a dead or disconnected opener, a misaligned or damaged track, or a safety sensor that’s blocked or out of alignment. In most cases, a technician can identify the exact problem within a few minutes of arriving.

Call (910) 858-8029

The door itself is usually fine. What’s failed is one of the systems that moves it or allows it to move. That distinction matters because it changes what gets repaired and how long it takes. A broken torsion spring is a different job from a dead opener motor, even though both leave you standing in front of a door that won’t budge. The sections below walk through each cause so you can get a better read on what you’re dealing with before anyone arrives.

Why It Happens

Broken Torsion or Extension Spring

Springs do the real work of lifting a garage door. They’re wound under extreme tension, and after thousands of cycles they fatigue and snap. When a torsion spring breaks, you’ll usually hear a loud bang – sometimes described as a gunshot – and the door will either drop or simply refuse to move. Look above the door opening: a torsion spring sits along a horizontal bar near the top of the frame. If you see a visible gap in the coil, or the spring looks separated in the middle, that’s your answer.

Safety note: Do not attempt to operate a door with a broken spring, and never try to release or wind the spring yourself. Springs under torsion store serious mechanical energy. This is a job for a trained technician with the right tools.

Dead, Disconnected, or Faulty Opener

If the opener hums but the door doesn’t move, or if pressing the button does nothing at all, the problem may be with the opener unit rather than the door’s mechanical components. Check the obvious first: is the opener plugged in, and is the outlet working? Some openers have a reset button. Also check whether the red emergency release cord has been pulled – this disconnects the door from the drive carriage and leaves it in manual mode. If the opener runs but the door doesn’t move, the drive mechanism inside the unit may have stripped or broken.

Misaligned or Damaged Track

The door rides inside two vertical tracks on either side of the opening. If a track bends, shifts, or a roller pops out, the door will bind partway up or refuse to move at all. Stand to the side and look at both tracks: they should be straight, parallel, and flush against the door panels. A visible gap between a roller and the track, a dent in the rail, or a section of track that’s pulled away from the wall are all signs this is the cause.

Safety Sensors Out of Alignment or Blocked

Most modern openers won’t close – and some won’t open fully – if the photo-eye sensors near the floor on each side of the door aren’t communicating. The sensors have small LED indicator lights: one should be solid green, the other solid amber. If either light is blinking or off, the sensors are misaligned or something is blocking the beam. Wipe the lenses with a dry cloth and check for debris on the floor in the path of the beam. If the lights still don’t steady up, the sensors may need realignment or replacement.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop trying to force it. Repeatedly hitting the wall button or remote when something is mechanically wrong can damage the door panels, strip the opener drive, or – with a broken spring – cause the door to drop suddenly. One or two attempts is enough to confirm the door won’t move; after that, leave it alone.
  • Check the basics on the opener. Confirm it’s plugged in. Try the wall button if you’ve only tried the remote (or vice versa). Check the battery in the remote. If you have a keypad, try that too. Sometimes the fix is a $4 battery.
  • Look at the springs without touching them. Stand back and look at the horizontal bar above the door. A visible gap, a coil hanging loose, or a spring that looks like it’s in two pieces means a spring has broken. Do not touch it, do not try to wind it, do not try to release tension. Call for service.
  • Check the sensor lights. Look at the two small sensor units near the floor on each side of the door. Both should show a steady light. If one is blinking or dark, check for anything blocking the beam and wipe the lenses. If that doesn’t fix it, leave it for the technician.
  • Take a photo before anything is moved. A picture of the track, the spring, the sensors, or the opener unit as you found it gives your technician useful information before they even walk in the door – and it takes thirty seconds.

How We Fix It

When your local Doyle Garage Door Repair technician arrives, the first thing they do is a full door inspection – spring condition, track alignment, opener function, cable tension, and sensor calibration. This isn’t a billable add-on; it’s how we make sure we fix the right thing. Once the cause is identified, you get a written price for the repair before any work starts. That’s not a policy we apply sometimes – it’s on every job, every time, no exceptions.

If it’s a spring, our techs carry the most common torsion and extension spring sizes and can complete most replacements in a single visit. Track and roller repairs follow the same pattern. Opener issues that can’t be resolved on-site may point to a garage door opener repair or, where the unit is genuinely at end of life, a garage door installation of a new unit – your technician will tell you which applies and what each option costs before touching anything.

Most repairs are finished in under two hours. Every repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right. That’s in writing, included automatically, on every job.
